IACS updates W16 unified requirement for high‑strength steels used in welded structures

IACS has issued Corr.1 (March 2026) to Unified Requirement W16 for hot‑rolled, fine‑grain, weldable high‑strength structural steels intended for marine and offshore applications. The update clarifies scope and reinforces requirements for materials used in heavily loaded welded structures.

The requirements apply to high‑strength steels for marine/offshore structures and do not apply to commercial ship hull steels, which remain covered by Unified Requirement W11.

Why it matters for yards and operators

• review material specifications and supplier certifications;
• align welding procedures and WPS/PQR qualifications;
• plan procurement early for offshore and special‑structure projects.
