The BRS Shipbrokers Weekly Dry Bulk Newsletter shows that the dry bulk shipping market remains strongly influenced by Black Sea operational risks, sanctions and the reshaping of grain and fertilizer trade flows.

The BRS analysis notes that, more than four years after the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian seaborne grain and fertilizer exports continue to matter for Panamax, Supramax, Handymax and Ultramax demand. At the same time, the Black Sea’s high-risk profile keeps transport costs elevated through war-risk premiums, insurance expenses and more cautious commercial terms.

Grain, fertilizers and demand for smaller geared vessels

Russian grain exports have recovered during the first months of 2026 after a weather-affected 2025. According to the newsletter, this recovery mainly supports demand for smaller geared vessels trading from the Black Sea toward the Mediterranean and North-West Europe.

In fertilizers, Russia remains an important supplier for markets such as Brazil, India and the United States. Disruptions in the Middle East may increase the need for supply diversification, potentially adding support to Baltic Sea activity and routes toward South America and Asia.

Signals for maritime companies

For companies in the maritime ecosystem, these developments matter beyond spot freight levels. Route changes, vessel-class preferences and the cost of operating in risk-sensitive regions can influence operating decisions, fleet planning, demand for technical services and interest in efficient vessels for regional trades.

The newsletter also points to a Capesize and Panamax market selectively supported by ore, coal and grain flows, while Supramax and Ultramax activity remains highly regional. Overall, dry bulk is not moving under a single uniform trend, but through a period in which geopolitical risk, operating costs and cargo realignment are increasingly important drivers.
