The European Commission has announced the launch of the first five European Defence Projects of Common Interest, a framework designed to pool Member States’ resources around strategic defence capabilities developed and procured jointly.
For the maritime industry, the most relevant item is the project on integrated maritime and seabed defence. It confirms that subsea infrastructure security, maritime domain awareness and European industrial capacity are becoming central policy themes for the coming years.
Why this matters for the naval sector
The initiative is linked to the European Industrial Maritime Strategy and to the EU’s wider objective of reducing fragmentation in national defence efforts. In practical terms, this may create demand for design, construction, systems integration, maintenance and dual-use technologies with maritime applications.
- greater emphasis on maritime domain awareness and protection of critical infrastructure;
- opportunities for shipyards, suppliers and naval engineering companies connected to European defence value chains;
- a need for coordination between industry, authorities and professional organisations to access European programmes;
- related opportunities in drones, counter-drone systems and autonomous technologies.
For ANCONAV members, the topic is worth following not only as a defence initiative, but as an industrial signal: Europe is tying maritime security more clearly to its own production, innovation and maintenance capacity.
