Hormuz disruption revives bunker supply risks: implications for maritime operators

Extended disruption around the Strait of Hormuz is once again tightening pressure on marine fuel markets, at a time when many owners and shipping operators are already working with elevated operating costs. Current market signals point not only to higher bunker prices, but also to a growing concern around physical fuel availability at critical bunkering hubs.

According to industry updates, average VLSFO levels across leading bunkering centers have moved into stress territory for many trade lanes, while regional spreads remain pronounced. Asian and Middle Eastern hubs continue to trade at significantly tighter levels than parts of Europe and the US, pushing operators to reassess routing and refueling plans. For shipping companies, this means greater exposure to unplanned costs and faster decision cycles.

A second major impact is operational. In periods of fuel uncertainty, vessels often reduce speed to manage consumption, which may alter transit times and fleet rotation. At the same time, concentrated demand at key bunkering points can trigger congestion, waiting time, and additional port-related costs.

The VLSFO–HSFO spread also remains central to commercial planning. Fleets equipped with scrubbers can partially shield margins, while conventional fleets remain more exposed to price shocks. This divergence can create short-term competitive asymmetries and influence freight negotiations, spot pricing behavior, and bunker adjustment clauses.

For maritime companies and logistics stakeholders, priorities are clear: tighter bunker planning discipline, close monitoring of supply points, continuity scenarios for sensitive routes, and rapid review of commercial risk policies. If the Hormuz disruption persists, the market may enter a prolonged high-volatility phase in which proactive fuel-risk management becomes a core differentiator.
