A new European Commission implementing regulation updates the technical requirements applicable to marine equipment installed on board ships flying the flag of an EU Member State. The 10th Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1434, adopted on 30 June 2026, amends the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 2014/90/EU and will enter into force on 31 August 2026, repealing Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1533.
The regulation does not introduce new MED equipment, but it updates the requirements and testing standards for a wide range of existing equipment. The MED governs equipment such as life-saving appliances, fire protection, navigation and communication equipment, which must meet design, construction and performance requirements before being placed on the European market.
To ensure an orderly transition, marine equipment that was already compliant with national type-approval requirements before 23 September 2025 may continue to be placed on the market and installed on EU ships until 23 September 2028.
Manufacturers must ensure that their products comply with the updated regulation from 31 August 2026. Any Declaration of Conformity (DoC) issued after that date must refer to the 10th Implementing Regulation. In addition, some products may require new or additional testing before notified bodies — such as DNV — can issue updated MED certificates.
For the shipbuilding industry, the update means that shipyards, suppliers and shipowners should verify that the equipment installed or held in stock complies with the new standards, so that conformity documentation remains valid after the regulation enters into force.
