Small tanker market enters the second half of 2026 under new pressure

The small tanker market is entering the second half of 2026 in a delicate balance. After the ordering wave of 2022-2024, newbuilding contracting has slowed visibly, and shipowners appear to be making more selective investment decisions.

The key signal is the gap between lower newbuilding orders and continued activity in the second-hand market. This combination can keep existing tonnage trading for longer, while deliveries from earlier orderbooks continue to enter the fleet.

Demolition remains a critical variable. A low recycling pace means supply pressure may build gradually, especially if geopolitical disruptions that have lengthened voyages begin to ease. In this context, commercial discipline and careful demand analysis become essential for operators.

Market reporting also points to a stronger position for Chinese shipyards across key segments, including tankers, LPG carriers, vehicle carriers and container ships. At the same time, environmental pressure and compliance costs are widening the value gap between modern vessels and older tonnage.

For maritime companies, these trends reinforce the need for well-grounded projects, energy-efficient solutions and the ability to adapt quickly to regulatory requirements and shifts in trade flows.
