From 1 May 2026, speed trials relevant to EEDI certification for newly built ships must follow updated technical references. The change stems from IMO amendments that now point to newer versions of ISO 15016 and the ITTC procedure for preparing, conducting and analysing speed and power trials.
In practical terms, this is an important update for shipyards, owners, designers and classification societies. Sea trials can no longer be treated as a routine technical step. The way data is collected and interpreted becomes even more important for demonstrating the vessel’s declared energy-efficiency performance.
What changes in practice
- updated technical references now apply to the assessment of ship speed and power;
- requirements for sea conditions and data corrections become clearer;
- trial results directly affect proof of attained EEDI and the inspection process;
- yards and owners need to align procedures and documentation in advance.
For companies involved in building and delivering new ships, the change has immediate operational relevance. Any delay in adapting trial methodology may complicate sea-trial scheduling, class coordination and delivery timelines.
The key message is straightforward: projects entering the testing phase after 1 May 2026 should be prepared under the new technical references, not under older standards. A preventive review of internal procedures is advisable now.
