Vard has delivered the hybrid offshore construction and cable-laying vessel Discovery to Toyo Construction Co. Ltd., a project with direct relevance for Romania’s shipbuilding sector because the hull was built at Vard Shipyards Romania in Tulcea.
According to VARD, the handover took place at Vard Langsten, Norway, on 26 June 2026. The vessel is the first ordered by Japanese company Toyo Construction from VARD and also marks VARD’s first delivery to the Japanese offshore wind market.
Discovery is based on the VARD 9 15 design. It is about 151 metres long, has a 28-metre beam and a cable-carrying capacity of 9,000 tonnes. The vessel is fitted with a removable cable-lay system, two offshore cranes, a four-point mooring system and a helideck, enabling it to support cable-laying, construction, foundation work and other marine-resource projects.
The sustainability profile is also notable. The vessel includes a large battery pack, shore-power connection and an advanced energy management system designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions during operations and port stays.
For the ANCONAV community, the project highlights the role of Romanian yards in the international value chain for advanced specialised vessels, especially in offshore wind and marine infrastructure.
